Objectives and Purposes
To enhance participation by scientists who are U.S. citizens and members of visible ethnic minority groups (African American/Black, Hispanic/Latino, Native American/Alaska Native, and Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander) and women at Keystone Symposia and in the broader life sciences community.
Existing organizational structures which support this organization-wide initiative:
Board of Directors: A 15-member body comprised of world-renowned scientists.
Scientific Advisory Board: A 65-member body comprised on academic and industry scientists from across the United States and other nations.
Diversity Advisory Committee: A body of established, prominent scientists from such institutions as HHMI, University of Maryland-Baltimore County, University of Colorado at Denver HSC/Aurora, and the University of New Mexico, who provide knowledge, expertise and insight as Keystone Symposia continues to develop strategies and initiatives which foster and result in greater diversity both within the attendee and speaker populations at our meetings.
A full time Leadership Position in Diversity Initiatives: Dr. Laina King joined Keystone Symposia in April 2008 as Director of Diversity in Life Science Programs. Laina brings more than 25 years experience including positions in higher education administration at the dean’s level, a progression of academic appointments at an AACSB school of business administration, a school of pharmacy and a university graduate school culminating at the tenured professor level. Laina also brings consulting experience with the U.S. FDA, U.S. regional academic accrediting bodies, AAMC-LCME, U.S. Department of Defense, American Council on Education and Jones Intercable’s internet university.
