Summary of Meeting
The ability to characterize compounds, whether drug candidates, agrochemicals or environmental pollutants, using genomic tools, has come of age. The resulting biomarkers and their application to translational medicine is fundamentally changing the discovery, evaluation and approval of therapeutics. The pharmaceutical industry has been challenged by the FDA to adopt new technologies with the power to modernize its R&D 'toolkit' to help bring safer, more efficacious products to the market more quickly and cost-effectively. While transcriptomics is most mature, other complementary 'omic' technologies such as proteomics and metabonomics are developing rapidly. This conference provides the opportunity (i) compare and contrast the maturity and capabilities of the technologies, (ii) showcase current applications with actual examples from industry and academia, and (iii) highlight the hurdles to adoption of the technology and how they will be removed. Consequently the meeting brings together leaders in the field with proven experience integrating the component technologies - chemistry, genomics, informatics, pharmacology, toxicology, diagnostics and clinical practice - and negotiating the regulatory challenges.
