About Keystone Symposia...
Keystone Symposia is a non-profit organization with a distinguished 40-year history of organizing life science conferences to connect scientists across traditional disciplines and geographical and generational boundaries to catalyze scientific collaboration and accelerate discoveries that benefit humankind. Last year, a record 41% of our meeting attendees were graduate students and postdoctoral fellows. We are hearing from scientists across the world that the level of access these up-and-coming investigators enjoy at our meetings with the leaders in their fields is unparalleled. So Keystone Symposia conferences are not only valuable to the life science community because they accelerate discovery by facilitating interdisciplinary “cross-talk” and catalyzing new collaborations, they are also a vital means of identifying, nurturing and positioning the next generation of world-class investigators.
What is the Future of Science Fund?
The Keystone Symposia Future of Science Fund is a way, through outright or estate gifts, to provide scholarship support to postdoctoral and graduate students, and travel awards to investigators from developing countries, all of whom need help accessing and contributing to science at Keystone Symposia conferences. Gifts to the Future of Science Fund can be designated to support:
- competitive-based scholarships
- scholarships for underrepresented minority students and investigators
- Global Health Travel Awards to investigators from countries most affected by issues of inquiry at Keystone Symposia conferences
- general conference program support (Directors' Fund)
- specific conferences or topic areas of the donor's choice.
Future of Science Fund donors are typically alumni of previous meetings, new participants, and other individuals with a passion for scientific discovery and its translation into new applications that benefit the global community. These donors appreciate that others have made a significant impact on preparing and positioning them to make their contributions to science, and want to pass that gift of support to the next generation of scientists.
Honor a Mentor or Loved One Named Fund Opportunities
Keystone Symposia is happy to be able to offer named fund opportunities to donors who wish to establish a legacy of personal or organizational support for our scientific mission. A named fund is an especially meaningful way to honor a mentor or loved one(s), or to help define your own legacy in support of specific Keystone Symposia programs of particular importance to you.
Named funds, whether scholarship, travel award, or meeting support funds, will be recognized in perpetuity on all Keystone Symposia acknowledgement platforms, including Keystone Symposia websites (viewed by hundreds of thousands of scientific investigators per year), all future conference abstract books and slide loop presentations (seen by some 15,000 investigators annually), and Annual Reports.
- The minimum amount to create a named scholarship fund is $30,000
- The minimum amount to create a named underrepresented minority scholarship fund is $30,000
- The minimum amount to create a named Travel Awards fund is $100,000
- The minimum amount to create a named Meeting support fund is $500,000
An initial gift of less than the minimum amount to create an endowed fund with a signed pledge to bring the fund to the minimum amount within a 3 year period will be acceptable to place a fund into a named or unnamed endowment. Any such fund which has not attained a book value of the minimum amount within 3 years will revert to the general unrestricted endowment; funds set aside for investment, and the earnings used at the discretion of the Board of Directors.

Benefits and Needs of the Future of Science Fund…
Scientists and others donate to the Future of Science Fund because they understand the value of connecting the world's most accomplished scientists with the brightest young investigators currently in their graduate and post-doctoral training. They also know that program support for Keystone Symposia meetings is critical to accelerating life science discoveries. As part of the unique nature of Keystone Symposia conferences, senior scientists and young researchers interact throughout each meeting. These interactions help prepare and position young researchers to make their contributions to science.
At every Keystone Symposia meeting, young investigators compete for opportunities to present abstracts, and for scholarships that subsidize travel and lodging costs. Corporate sponsors, private foundations, and the National Institutes of Health provide generous support for conference programs and speakers, and for scholarships and travel awards for students and postdoctoral fellows. However, Keystone Symposia receives many more outstanding scholarship applications than these contributions can fund. In fact, the demand for scholarships and travel awards is growing faster than our ability to provide them.
Your donations are needed to maintain and strengthen a Future of Science Fund that provides adequate support for scholarships and travel awards, as well as program support to ensure the highest-quality scientific content at all Keystone Symposia meetings. We invite you to join those of us who are Future of Science Fund supporters by making a tax-free donation.
How do I donate?

Publicly Traded Stocks or Securities
Donating appreciated securities is a popular alternative to giving cash. For example, if you own shares of stock that are worth more than you paid for them and you've owned them for more than one year, you can transfer them to Keystone Symposia as a gift and claim the full market value as a charitable U.S. income tax deduction. And you'll avoid tax on the gain, giving you even greater benefits than with a gift of cash. Please contact Chris Atwood for instructions before initiating any transfer of securities. You may reach him via e-mail, or via phone at+1 (800) 253-0685 or+1 (970) 262-1230 , extension 124.
