General Information/Weather
Rising regally on the banks of Victoria's spectacular Inner Harbor, The Fairmont Empress showcases the spirit and energy of Vancouver Island in grand style. Lovingly restored to her turn-of-the-century beauty, The Fairmont Empress captures the grandeur and elegance of a bygone era, while her facilities and services meet the needs of today's traveler.

· Tip #1: Parking at the hotel is $28 CAD a night. Cars are not needed to get to and from the town and taxis are readily available. Rental cars are also available for day trips. National and Budget are located behind the hotel.
· Tip #2: For Visa and Entry Information to Canada visit http://www.traveldocs.com/ca/vr.htm. For a listing of countries whose citizens require visas to enter Canada http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/visit/visas.asp
· Tip #3: Victoria is located on Vancouver Island and not in the city of Vancouver.

 Food/Dining Notes: The food included will be: buffet breakfast (each day of the meeting except departure day) coffee breaks, and social hour with light snacks during poster sessions. However the food offered varies site by site. Menus for daily food offered will be posted as well as menus for the area. Social Hour is provided to give conferees an opportunity to socialize, have a light snack and participate in the poster session. Limited seating is available.
WEATHER NOTE:

Even if you are NOT participating in outdoor activities we suggest you bring clothes appropriate for the temperatures and forcasted weather.

The meetings are "resort casual" in dress (khakis, jeans, casual shirts, sweaters). Clothes that can be layered for outdoor/indoor environment will work best.

Travel/Transportation Information

 Airport Notes: There are a variety of transportation options available to Victoria including options from Vancouver and Seattle.

  • Taxis are available from the Victoria International Airport to your hotel at approximately $55 CAD.
  • Buses and ferries are available from the Vancouver airport to Victoria.
  • Sea planes are available into Victoria from both Vancouver and Seattle and are within one city block of the hotel when they land. These flights are very weather dependant.
  • Flying into Seattle is easiest in terms of clearing Customs and Immigration. However not as many flights run into Seattle.
  • Vehicle and passenger ferries are available from Seattle and Port Angeles but the ferry takes about 4 hours from Seattle.
  • There is a parking charge at the Fairmont Empress. The town center is easily within walking distance of the hotel.

     Ground Transportation: Pacific Coach provides transportation from the Vancouver airport to the Victoria bus depot which is right next to the Fairmont Empress on a daily schedule. Victoria to the Vancouver airport transfers are also available on a daily schedule. Please visit www.pacificcoach.com or call 800-661-1725 for information on rates and schedules.

    AKAL Airport Shuttle Bus Link offers a rate of $18/person CAD from the Victoria airport to the Fairmont Empress or $11/person for groups of 4 or more (advance reservations required).     Taxis are also available from the Victoria International Airport to your hotel at approximately $55 CAD.

     Driving Directions:

    The hotel's main intersections are Government and Humboldt.

    Vehicle & passenger ferries from Seattle and Port Angeles, as well as sea planes from both Vancouver and Seattle are within the immediate vicinity of the hotel.


    From Victoria International Airport to The Fairmont Empress:

    • Proceed south on Hwy 17 from the airport.   
    • Hwy 17 becomes Blanshard Street at the city limits of Victoria.   
    • Continue south on Blanshard Street.   
    • Turn right on Belleville Street.   
    • Continue on Belleville Street for two blocks.   
    • Turn right on Government Street.   
    • The Fairmont Empress is located at 721 Government Street.

    From Vancouver (Tsawwassen Terminal) to The Fairmont Empress:

    • Docks at Swartz Bay Terminal.             
    • Proceed south on Hwy 17.             
    • Hwy 17 becomes Blanshard Street at the city limits of Victoria.   
    • Continue south on Blanshard Street.              
    • Turn right on Belleville Street.              
    • Continue on Belleville Street for two blocks.   
    • Turn right on Government Street.              
    • The Fairmont Empress is located at 721 Government Street.
