JAKs and STATs: Activation and Biologic Impact
Organizer(s): George R. Stark, Ian M. Kerr and James E. Darnell, Jr.
Date: January 13 - 18, 2002
Location: Snowbird Resort, Snowbird, UT, USA
Sponsored in part by The Director's Sponsor Fund

Summary of Meeting:
The JAK tyrosine kinases and STAT transcription factors are now appreciated to be essential for the function of many pathways that regulate gene expression and biological function. Exciting current research has revealed, for example, family members in slime molds and insects, both positive and negative regulation of gene expression, cross-responses to pathways that use serine phosphorylation, and that Stat3 is an oncogene and Stat1 a tumor suppressor. Future issues: determine more protein structures, mechanisms and significance of serine phosphorylation, details of pivotal protein-protein interactions, basis of ligand-specific signals. Meeting goals: to cross-fertilize a very large range of research projects in an exciting and rapidly evolving field.
Discounted Abstract Deadline: October 1 2001
