Summary of Meeting:
NF-kappaB (NF-kB) is a transcription factor which is involved in the transcription of many genes involved in growth differentiation and development. In addition, the transcription of many lymphokines and cytokines involved in inflammation, rheumatoid arthritis, cancer, and other metabolic diseases is also regulated by NF-kB. NF-kB resides in the cytoplasm, and following induction with a wide variety of agents, is translocated to the nucleus. The translocation to the nucleus, however, is dependent on the degradation of IkB which is associated with NF-kB in the cytoplasm. There is a very complex machinery which leads to the phosphorylation, ubiquitination, and degradation of IkB. This meeting is designed for graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and scientists working in the field, to understand the molecular mechanisms of activation of NF-kB. There is extensive emphasis on the mechanisms by which NF-kB proteins play a role in disease and identification of therapeutic molecules that may intervene in the biological activity of NF-kB.
