Cellular Motility and Signaling in the Wiring and Plasticity of Nervous Systems
Organizer(s): Thomas D. Pollard, James H. Sabry and Carla J. Shatz
Date: March 23 - 28, 2002
Location: Sagebrush Inn & Suites, Taos, NM, USA
Sponsored by Aventis Pharmaceuticals, Inc. and The Director's Sponsor Fund
Summary of Meeting:
Cell biologists have recently mapped the signaling pathways (small GTPases to WASP to Arp2/3 complex) that control the assembly of actin filaments that drives forward the leading edge of motile cells. Independently, neurobiologists have identified key plasma membrane receptors for soluble and matrix molecules that guide the motility of neuronal growth cones to their targets during the hard wiring of the nervous system – approximately one million miles of neuronal process in the human brain! Throughout life, synaptic connections are remodeled by process that also appear to depend on actin assembly. Although these fields are working on the same process, communications have been minimal. One neurobiologist commented, 'These groups have rarely, if ever, been seen in the same room'. Our symposium will bring together leaders working on both actin-based motility and development of nervous systems, with confidence that mutually beneficial insights will emerge from discussing each other's work.
