Wnt and Beta-Catenin Signaling in Development and Disease
joint with Protein Phosphorylation and Mechanisms of Cellular Regulation
Organizer(s): Randall T. Moon and Jacqueline S. Papkoff
Date: March 05 - 10, 2002
Location: Taos Convention Center (meeting only), Taos, NM, USA
Summary of Meeting:
Research into the molecular mechanisms of embryonic development and into the causes of human diseases has revealed that similar signal transduction pathways play key roles in both processes. The Wnt/ß-catenin signaling pathway exemplifies this principle. This pathway was initially identified as a regulator of segment polarity in Drosophila embryos, and based on its involvement in promoting mammary tumors in the mouse. However, recent work has also demonstrated that mutations that regulate ß-catenin function are involved in a wide range of human cancers, including melanoma, and colorectal cancer. The goal of this meeting is to promote discussion of the mechanisms of Wnt signaling in development and disease by basic researchers and the pharmaceutical/biotechnology industry, thereby helping to translate this knowledge into drug targets and therapies.
