Summary of Meeting:
Upon completion of this conference, participants should be able to: - Get a comprehensive understanding of the biochemistry and structural biology of apoptosis. - Understand the biochemical and structural mechanisms of caspase activation, inhibition, and regulation. - Discuss biochemical mechanisms of both caspase-dependent and independent pathways. - Obtain a mechanistic understanding of the roles of mitochondria and Bcl-2 family proteins during apoptosis. - Realize and apply the therapeutic potentials of agonists as well as antagonists of apoptosis. - Assess the major unresolved issues in apoptosis, such as the release mechanisms of mitochondrial proteins and the roles of mitochondria in lower species. - Integrate biochemistry and structural biology with genetics and cell biology to decipher the mechanisms of apoptosis in their future research. - Foster strong and meaningful collaboration among geneticists, cell biologists, biochemists, and structural biologists to elucidate the mechanisms of apoptosis.
