Summary of Meeting:
Enzymes that act on nucleic acids lie at the heart of all processes of information transfer in the biological world. The fields of DNA metabolism and RNA metabolism have often been treated separately, although these two areas of research share many common mechanisms and principles. In addition, many of the relevant processes take place in the context of elaborate molecular machines that share some components. Current research explores the enzymatic mechanisms, and is increasingly focused on the structure and function of the molecular machines of which they are a part. In this meeting, we bring together the fields of RNA and DNA enzymology. The program is uniquely organized to highlight common mechanisms and themes, while at the same time exposing both communities to novel approaches to mechanistic problems. Many sessions are designed to juxtapose prominent individuals working in both areas.
