NF-kappaB: 20 Years on the Road from Biochemistry to Pathology
Organizer(s): Alain Israël, David Baltimore and Yinon M. Ben-Neriah
Date: March 23 - 28, 2006
Location: Fairmont Banff Springs, Banff, AB, Canada
Supported by The Director's Fund
Summary of Meeting:
The NF-kB signaling pathway is a critical determinant of the inflammatory response, and is involved in both innate and acquired immunity. It also controls apoptosis and is becoming an important target for anticancer therapy. While the components that lead to NF-kB activation are progressively identified, evidence for involvement of NF-kB in multiple human pathologies (cancer, immune deficiencies, diabetes and atherosclerosis) is accumulating. However, a number of questions remain unanswered: the structure of the IKK complex needs to be solved to understand its mode of activation; the respective roles of the multiple NF-kB species have to be precisely defined; the exact function of the multiple components and branches of this cascade need to be addressed by biochemical and genetic approaches. This meeting will bring together people with diverse backgrounds and should generate interactions required for better understanding of this pathway and its associated pathophysiology. Ultimately, these interactions could be translated into new therapeutic modalities.
