Frontiers in Gastrointestinal Cancer: Molecular Genetics, Inflammation, Early Detection and Therapy
Organizer(s): Qimin Zhan, Yang Ke, Xin Wei Wang, Raymond DuBois and Zongtang Sun
Date: October 14 - 19, 2007
Location: Capital Hotel, Beijing, China
In Collaboration with and Cosponsored by Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences and Peking University Health Science Center
Summary of Meeting:
Gastrointestinal (GI) malignancies account for a large fraction of human cancers. They are almost without exception incurable when gross metastases exist. Three of the 20 top leading causes of worldwide mortality are related to GI malignancies. For example, liver cancer is the third leading cause of worldwide cancer deaths and most of them (>79%) are in Asia. Liver and gastric cancers are the leading cause of cancer deaths in China. There is a strong need to discuss and develop a coherent strategy by joining efforts from both east and west to study GI malignancies. The Keystone Symposia is an excellent platform for a conference on GI malignancies because of its high scientific standard and impact. An in depth discussion of the interest in molecular epidemiology, GI cancer models, molecular diagnostic/prognostic, therapeutic strategies and cancer stem cells in the context of rapid development of these areas is therefore timely. The goals of this symposium are to bring together Academia, Government and Industry laboratories from Asia, North America and Europe working on gastroenterological malignancies, to exchange state-of-the-art and late-breaking discoveries, and to update consensus strategies in a fight against these malignancies.
We gratefully acknowledge additional support for this conference from:
