Summary of Meeting:
Maintenance of stable body weight involves a biological process termed energy homeostasis that matches cumulative energy intake to expenditure over time. Obesity is an increasingly common disorder of energy homeostasis and has become a leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. The identification of critical integrative neuronal systems that control both energy balance and glucose metabolism has important implications for the future of obesity therapy. This symposium will focus on cellular and molecular mechanisms whereby neural circuits responsible for perception of satiety and food reward are integrated with one another and with neuronal systems controlling insulin sensitivity. We explore the regulation of these circuits by adiposity- and nutrient-related signals and feature new evidence of synaptic plasticity affecting these pathways. The application of new technologies that are moving these fields forward and the clinical relevance of basic science discoveries will also be highlighted. Through an improved understanding of obesity pathogenesis, this new information will support progress towards improved obesity treatment options.
