Type 2 Diabetes and Insulin Resistance
joint with Obesity: Novel Aspects of the Regulation of Body Weight
Organizer(s): Kitt F. Petersen and Laurie J. Goodyear
Date: January 20 - 25, 2009
Location: Fairmont Banff Springs, Banff, AB, Canada
Sponsored by Hoffmann-La Roche, Inc. and Novartis Institutes for BioMedical Research
Summary of Meeting:
The current rise in the prevalence of type 2 diabetes and the metabolic syndrome is believed to be a result of increasingly sedentary lifestyles combined with ready access to energy rich food sources in genetically susceptible individuals leading to insulin resistance. Studies of insulin signaling and its interactions with nutrient and hormonal pathways are central to our understanding of insulin resistance and the pathogenesis of type 2 diabetes. In recent years several areas have become the main focus of interest: the role of lipid and lipid metabolites in the pathogenesis of insulin resistance in muscle and liver; the role of mitochondrial function and biogenesis in the oxidative capacity of muscle and the relation to insulin resistance and susceptibility to the metabolic syndrome; the mechanisms of inflammation-induced insulin resistance; the role of adipocytes and their production of adipocytokines; as well as the mechanistic integration of b-cell failure and insulin resistance. The conference will bring together leaders in the academic and pharmaceutical communities to present the latest developments in these areas of research.
