Summary of Meeting:
Lipids are hydrophobic small molecules required for life that carry out a multitude of critical functions. Lipids can act as hormones, intermediate signaling molecules, vitamins, structural elements in biological membranes and vehicles for energy storage. Disruptions in their levels of expression, as in obesity, diabetes, autoimmunity or certain inborn errors of lipid metabolism, promote profound disease states derived from dysfunctions in a broad spectrum of human organs. Key gaps in our understanding of these dysfunctions include the signaling cascades in which lipid intermediates operate, missing steps in regulatory mechanisms that control lipid synthesis and storage, and poorly described processes whereby various cell types respond to lipid overload. Thus the goals of this conference are to attract researchers at all career stages from multiple disciplines of lipid biology, and to address several central problems in the field: 1. How do disrupted lipid signaling pathways integrate with metabolic regulation to cause cellular dysfunction and metabolic/cardiovascular disease? 2. What are the mechanisms that control the cell biology of lipid storage and release? 3. How do genetic and epigenetic mechanisms control lipid metabolism and related disease? 4. How do various routes of adipogenesis control lipid-related energy expenditure? Of particular interest will be discussion of new technologies for lipid analysis and function in biology and medicine, for which a workshop will be included from abstract submissions. There will also be optimal opportunities for oral presentations of the latest data on all of the above topics to be selected from submitted abstracts.
