Nuclear receptors are ligand-dependent transcriptional regulators that govern virtually every aspect of fetal and adult life in metazoans. In addition to the well-characterized receptors that respond to steroid and thyroid hormones, retinoids, and other lipophilic metabolites, this family includes a number of orphan receptors whose ligands and physiologic functions are under intense investigation. Nuclear receptors are also important therapeutic targets, because of their involvement in reproduction, metabolic and endocrine diseases, and cancer. Major questions in this field are focused on elucidating the molecular mechanisms underlying transcriptional activation and repression of target genes, and the translation of these processes into physiological responses at the organismal level. This meeting will bring together leading experts in structural and molecular biology, functional genomics and engineered mouse genetics, as well as younger investigators and trainees, from both academia and industry, to present their current research and discuss new approaches that can address these key issues.
