Summary of Meeting:
Over the last decade it has become clear that many key signal transduction processes are strongly influenced by transmembrane cell adhesion molecules and by their associated cytoskeletal partners. In particular there has been a great deal of progress in understanding how integrin-mediated adhesion to the extracellular matrix leads to the organization of supramolecular complexes of structural and signaling proteins, and how these complexes then regulate the efficiency of signaling pathways. More recently, evidence is beginning to emerge that cell-cell adhesion molecules, including cadherins and immunoglobulin-superfamily proteins, also have strong impacts on signal transduction. Cell-cell adhesion molecule (CAM) mediated signaling seems to be particularly important in the context of the nervous system, and in the context of the organization of polarized epithelia. Thus this proposed Keystone Symposia intends to address several key aspects of the emerging research theme of CAMs and their role in signaling pathways affecting mitogenesis, cell survival, and cell differentiation.
