This Keystone Symposia will focus on the regulation of mucosal inflammation and will consider mechanisms of inflammation relative to all mucosal surfaces. It will be held in conjunction with a second symposium entitled Hygiene, Allergy and Asthma since this latter symposium addresses many of the same issues, albeit in the context of mucosal inflammation in the pulmonary tract. The first day of the symposium will initially focus on the factors that control the overall development of the mucosal immune system and then turn to the mechanism of tolerance induction in the mucosal immune system. These topics provide the theoretical basis for the understanding of mucosal inflammation. The second day will begin with a plenary session held jointly with the “sister” symposium and will focus on dendritic cell function in the gastrointestinal and pulmonary tracts. It will then conclude with examination of effector and regulatory mechanisms underlying mucosal inflammation. The third day will open with a second joint plenary session in this case considering regulatory (suppressor) mechanism in the gastrointestinal and pulmonary tracts. It will then conclude with an examination of new murine models of mucosal inflammation. The fourth and last day of the symposium will first consider epithelial cell function and mucosal homeostasis, a subject that meshes well with the consideration of environmental factors in pulmonary inflammation being considered in the “sister” symposium. It will then consider the homing of cells to the mucosal mediated by the chemokine system. With this agenda, this Keystone Symposium will provide a keen examination of the major outstanding questions in the area of mucosal inflammation. As such, it will provide major insights into the mechanisms underlying mucosal inflammatory diseases such as inflammatory bowel disease and asthma.
