Transmissible Spongiform Encephalopathies have been known to exist for centuries, and have received a great deal of attention in the last decade on account of the outbreaks of the Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy and the Chronic Wasting Disease epidemics. Studies with genetically modified mice have established several fundamental principles of prion diseases, such as the absolute necessity of the prion protein for its pathogenesis. Recent advances in the structural biology of prion proteins, in concert with functional studies have helped to shed light on possible normal and disease associated roles of the prion protein. This has opened the possibility to study therapeutical principles in prion diseases. However, essential questions such as the true nature of the infectious agent, and the detailed molecular mechanisms of prion diseases await elucidation. The goal of the meeting is to bring together leading experts from different fields of prion disease research in order to discuss recent advances, and in order to devise new approaches on solving problems posed by these enigmatic diseases.
