Frontiers in Structural Biology
joint with Structural Genomics
Organizer(s): Cynthia Wolberger, Douglas C. Rees and Arthur G. Palmer III
Date: January 29 - February 03, 2006
Location: Keystone Resort, Keystone, CO, USA
Supported by The Director's Fund
Summary of Meeting:
Structural biologists have achieved spectacular success in gaining a detailed understanding of the mechanisms that underlie basic biological processes. The frontiers of structural biology have expanded at an ever-accelerating pace as new methods and technologies are developed in the fields of x-ray crystallography, NMR spectroscopy, electron microscopy, single-molecule studies, and computations. New interdisciplinary approaches that employ multiple methods to attack a single problem have yielded important new insights into macromolecular function. This understanding of macromolecular complexes that mediate fundamental biological processes is essential to the process of drug discovery. This meeting will bring together structural biologists who use a variety of methods to study fundamental biological mechanisms. The presentations at the meeting will highlight some of the recent remarkable achievements of structural biology, as well as highlighting the ways in which new approaches are expanding the types of problems amenable to structural and biophysical study.
