Molecular and Cellular Determinants of HIV Pathogenesis
joint with HIV Vaccines: From Basic Research to Clinical Trials
Organizer(s): Michael H. Malim, Julie M. Overbaugh and Robert W. Doms
Date: March 25 - 30, 2007
Location: Whistler Conference Centre, Whistler, BC, Canada
Part of the Keystone Symposia Global Health Series, Supported by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation
Summary of Meeting:
Recent research has highlighted the dynamic nature of the ongoing conflict between HIV and its infected host; if left untreated, this is a battle that is almost always won by the virus. Much progress has been made in understanding critical host-pathogen interactions at the molecular and cellular levels. For instance, viral and cellular determinants of transmission have been defined, new mechanisms of innate anti-HIV resistance discovered, key differences between pathogenic and non-pathogenic HIV/SIV infections identified, immunopathogenic consequences of HIV infection elucidated and three-dimensional structures of critical cellular and viral proteins (and RNAs) deduced. Major future challenges for HIV/AIDS researchers include not only incorporating this information into models of HIV pathogenesis, but also defining logical new therapeutic targets and providing rational perspectives to vaccine design. By bringing together international leaders in research, new and exciting findings in these areas will be discussed, emerging concepts debated and new paradigms established. Finally, by including “abstract-driven workshops” in our program, less-senior investigators and trainees will get the opportunity to showcase their talents and contribute to the appeal and success of the meeting.
