Molecular Control of Adipogenesis and Obesity joint with Neuronal Mechanisms Controlling Food Intake, Glucose Metabolism and Body Weight Organizer(s): Ormond A. MacDougald and Evan D. Rosen Date: February 19 - 24, 2008 Location: Fairmont Banff Springs, Banff, AB, CanadaThe worldwide epidemic in obesity has brought with it dramatic increases in the prevalence of co-morbid, chronic conditions including insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes. To further our understanding of the molecular control of adipogenesis and obesity, this meeting will focus on several rapidly developing and important areas. These include novel transcriptional regulators of adipogenesis, the adipocyte lipid droplet as an organelle, mechanisms of insulin-resistance, relationships between white adipocytes and alternative mesenchymal cell fates, and genetic contributions to energy balance in humans and model organisms. Cutting edge research in these areas will improve our understanding of mechanisms by which precursor cells develop into adipocytes, and how excess adipose tissue leads to diseases such as diabetes. Our goal is to attract researchers from around the world to participate in an interactive meeting on these physiological and pathological aspects of adipose tissue biology.
