The global burden of diabetes and its complications represents an emerging pandemic. Progress in understanding the fundamental mechanisms contributing to vascular disease, nephropathy, retinopathy and neuropathy has yet to translate into effective therapeutics. This meeting will assemble scientists from diverse backgrounds to provide new perspectives on underlying biology relevant to diabetic complications. These presentations will provide fresh insights that stimulate new ideas about answering the major unsolved questions about diabetic complications. These include effects of diabetes on stem cells and tissue repair, new concepts about biological pathways involved in diabetic tissue damage, and identification of new experimental and clinical paradigms for studying the pathogenesis of diabetic complications and for developing therapeutics. The meeting content seeks to challenge current research paradigms by introducing novel concepts and experimental approaches, addressing questions about the genetics of complications, for example, with discussions of gene interactions, epigenetics, and networks. Experts in metabolism, stem cell biology, mitochondrial biology, model organisms, and clinical complications will be brought together to provide new perspectives for scientists focused on the problem of developing new approaches to the prevention and treatment of diabetic complications. This will be the third time Keystone held a meeting on this topic. As a result of these prior meetings, the diverse community of scientists previously focused on various different diabetic complications is just now forming an interactive and cross-fertilizing network. There is no other meeting of a similar nature providing a venue devoted to discussion of the diverse aspects of tissue dysfunction and damage caused by diabetes. This meeting will have several joint sessions with the simultaneous Keystone meeting on Innate Immunity, Metabolism and Vascular Injury.
