Janelle S. Ayres, PhD
The Salk Institute for Biological Studies
Janelle S. Ayres, Ph.D., is the Salk Legacy Professor and Director of the Molecular and Systems Physiology Laboratory at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies, and an Investigator at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. Her research challenges the longstanding assumption that surviving infection requires eliminating a pathogen, instead demonstrating that hosts can employ disease tolerance defenses through a 'cooperative defense system' that defend against physiological damage, promoting survival without targeting the pathogen directly. She performed her doctoral training with David Schneider at Stanford University and postdoctoral research with Russell Vance at UC Berkeley. She is the recipient of the NIH Director's Pioneer Award and the Blavatnik National Award for Young Scientists, among many other honors.
Gregory M. Barton, PhD

Gregory M. Barton, Ph.D., is the C.H. Li Distinguished Professor of Immunology and Molecular Medicine at the University of California, Berkeley, an Investigator at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, and Co-Chair of the Department of Molecular and Cell Biology. His research focuses on innate immune recognition of microbes, particularly the mechanisms by which Toll-like receptors and other nucleic acid-sensing receptors discriminate self from non-self, with implications for autoimmune and autoinflammatory diseases. His lab also investigates host-microbe interactions in the intestine to understand how the immune system distinguishes beneficial from harmful bacteria. He conducted his doctoral training with Alexander Rudensky and postdoctoral training with Ruslan Medzhitov, where he carried out foundational studies on the role of Toll-like receptors in adaptive immunity.
Carrie L. Lucas, PhD
Yale University
Carrie L. Lucas, Ph.D., is an Associate Professor of Immunobiology at Yale School of Medicine. Her laboratory focuses on discovering single-gene defects underlying severe immune disorders in humans, using patient cells and genetically engineered mouse models to dissect the mechanisms revealed by these mutations and identify translationally relevant therapies. She received her Ph.D. from Harvard Medical School and conducted postdoctoral training at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases at the NIH. She is the recipient of the AAI-Steinman Award for Human Immunology Research and the ICIS Christina Fleischmann Award to Young Women Investigators.
