Andrew Gewirtz, Ph.D., is Regents Professor at Georgia State University and is internationally recognized for his pioneering work revealing how the innate immune system detects and responds to microbiota to maintain homeostasis, and how these responses can become dysregulated in chronic inflammatory diseases. His lab has explained the complex interplay between the microbiome, epithelial signaling and host immunity, providing key insights into the pathogenesis of inflammatory bowel disease, obesity, insulin resistance, and the role of the gut-lung axis in determining respiratory infection severity.
Ivaylo I. Ivanov, PhD
Columbia University
Ivaylo Ivanov, Ph.D., is a Professor of Microbiology and Immunology at the Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons at Columbia University. His research focuses on how intestinal commensal bacteria regulate host immunity and systemic physiology, including the discovery of segmented filamentous bacteria as a driver of Th17 cell differentiation. His lab has identified key transcriptional regulators of type 3 immunity, defined diet–microbiota–immune networks influencing metabolic disease, and developed tools for in vivo genetic engineering of commensal bacteria to probe host–microbiota interactions. He has extensive experience organizing conferences including American Association of Immunologists conferences.
Ruth E. Ley, PhD
Max Planck Institute for Biology
Ruth Ley, Ph.D., is Director of the Department of Microbiome Science at the Max Planck Institute for Biology. Her research focuses on the evolutionary adaptations of microbiota to the human host. Her lab identified microbial species that share an evolutionary history with human populations, along with genomic traits consistent with host-dependency. Her lab also has identified and defined mechanisms of silent flagellins, which engage innate immune receptors without triggering inflammatory responses.
