Meeting Summary

Mitochondrial biology is central to cellular health, as its dysfunction is implicated in cancer, neurodegeneration, and metabolic diseases. New therapeutic innovations in leveraging medicinal synthetic biology including genome editing and small molecules are key to targeting mitochondrial dysfunction and overcoming bioenergetic challenges. A major gap remains in understanding how mitochondria communicate with other organelles within cells and tissues—a challenge that can be addressed by integrating lipid and metabolic flux analyses (fluxomics) with high-resolution 3D imaging techniques, including volumetric electron microscopy.
The upcoming Keystone meeting, "Integrative Mitochondrial Medicine," aims to bridge cell and structural biology with dynamic metabolite profiling and bioenergetics. Sessions will explore mitochondrial genome and transcriptome editing and synthetic biology platforms to understand or enhance organelle crosstalk and reprogram metabolic pathways, advancing the field toward novel biomarkers and standardized protocols for multi-scale mitochondrial analyses. It will showcase cutting-edge technologies like cryo-electron tomography and AI-driven morphometric quantitation to resolve mitochondrial ultrastructure in health and disease.
This meeting stands out by uniting cell biologists, clinicians, computational modelers, and bioengineers. Unique workshops will pair structural imaging experts with fluxomics specialists to decode spatial-metabolic relationships, while panels foster dialogue between synthetic biologists and pharmaceutical researchers on drugging mitochondrial targets. Innovative program elements include hands-on virtual reality platforms for 3D reconstruction and a "Shark Tank"-style session for pitching therapeutic concepts to investors. Attendees and editors will have the opportunity to sample emerging trends in integrative mitochondrial approaches, positioning this forum as a nexus for next-generation mitochondrial medicine and clinical translation.
